UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today sounded the alarm about the spread of the dangers of suicide and its effects on communities.
In an official message to the international community on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10 each year, he said that mental health has been neglected for a very long time, but it concerns us all and more action is urgently needed.
He called for increased investments in health and psychological services, stressing the importance of not allowing stigma to prevent people from seeking the help they need.
Guterres said he was paying close attention to the issue, saying “there is no health without mental health.”
It is worth mentioning that the World Health Organization dedicates this day every year to the broadcast and implementation of a number of awareness programs on the importance of mental health, and the theme of this year is “suicide prevention”.
In a media statement, the organization noted that every 40 seconds, there is a person somewhere that makes the tragic decision to end his life, that is, 800 thousand people put an end to their lives every year, which makes suicide the second cause of death among young people between the ages of 15 and 29 years .
