Brazilian President empowers the army to help fight wildfires in the Amazon rainforest

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said today that he has authorized the deployment of troops to help fight wildfires in the Amazon rainforest while combating criminal activities in the region.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that the Amazon rainforest wildfire is a “serious emergency,” Merkel believes this is what the world leaders should discuss at the G7 summit this weekend.

He also said: “The range of fires in the Amazon rainforest area is shocking, not only threatening Brazil and other affected countries, but also the entire world.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office said that the UK is deeply worried about the Amazon rainforest fire, and Johnson will use the G7 summit to call for a renewed focus on protecting nature.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also warned against the Amazon rainforest fire.

In this world’s largest rainforest, the Brazilian President’s mandate covers areas such as the Amazon’s indigenous tribal territories and protected areas in Brazil’s territory.
