South Korean industry illegal exports of strategic materials including Iran and Syria

South Korea government said yesterday that in the past four years, a total of 156 cases of illegal export strategic materials have been seized, which proves that South Korea’s export management system is effective and transparent. Japanese media reported that according to the information, the export destinations include Iran, Syria and other countries with close ties to North Korea.

According to the Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK), according to information released by the South Korean government, South Korean industry illegal exports can be used in strategic cases of weapons, and 156 cases have been seized in the past four years. The Japanese government believes that South Korea’s lack of a sound trade management system is one of the backgrounds for strengthening export controls on South Korea.

At the request of the National Assembly, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources of South Korea collected the cases of illegal export of strategic materials by operators in October last year and May this year.

Among them, South Korean operators have exported hydrogen fluoride to the United Arab Emirates Park and Vietnam; South Korea’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources said that South Korean traders have not exported Iran’s strategic materials to the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam, “not including hydrogen fluoride produced in Japan”.

South Korean experts said that the neurotoxic agent VX used by the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-nam, and the raw materials for the production of sarin gas were also found to be illegally exported.

Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun reported that according to information provided by South Korea’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources to South Korean opposition parties, the illegal export destinations include Iran, Syria and other countries with close ties to North Korea.

The South Korean government said that hydrogen fluoride, which was recently imported from Japan, “has no evidence of a flow to North Korea.”

The report pointed out that South Korea’s successive seizure of strategic materials was illegally exported, which also cast doubt on the management system of the South Korean government.

The Japanese government imposed a three-material export control measure on South Korea on the 4th, on the grounds that “(South Korea has had an inappropriate case), and whether the 156 cases of illegal exports announced by South Korea include inappropriate cases referred to by Japan, currently unknown.

Japan’s TBS TV reported that South Korea’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources announced in the evening that the South Korean government publicly seized cases of illegal exports every year. “This is evidence of the effectiveness and transparency of the South Korean export management system.”
